Frames & beams

LOADS AND LOAD NOTICES

Capacity is a design question, not a visual guess.

Rackway’s quick guide refers to beam load capacities and UDL information commonly shown on load notices. Treat those notices and verified system information as essential operating data.

Uniformly distributed load (UDL) describes a load spread in the way assumed by the beam rating. Real pallet loads are not always perfectly uniform, and the capacity of an installation depends on more than the beam alone. Frame duty, beam levels, configuration, component condition, anchoring, floor and design assumptions all matter.

Safety note: HSE guidance says racking should be properly designed and installed for the loads being stored, protected where vehicle impact is likely, and inspected and maintained. Site-specific engineering and competent safety advice take priority over general website guidance.
USED RACKING CONDITION

Good used equipment still needs a condition check.

Used pallet racking is reused structural equipment. Condition therefore matters just as much as dimensions and appearance.

Look for obvious deformation, impact damage, torn or stretched connector areas, missing locking devices, bent bracing, damaged footplates, severe corrosion, poorly executed repairs and components that have been altered. A fresh coat of paint does not restore structural capacity, and cosmetic marks do not necessarily make a sound component unusable; what matters is the actual condition and suitability of the structural parts.

MEZZANINE FLOORS

Used mezzanine equipment can transform space, but it remains a structural project.

Rackway’s used-racking page describes used mezzanine floors and lists components including chipboard tongue-and-groove flooring, purlins, steels, stairs, fire escapes, handrails and loading gates.

A mezzanine can create a second level of usable floor area, but the project must begin with the building, proposed use, loading, access and regulatory requirements. A used structure may offer value when suitable material is available, but the final arrangement still needs project-specific design and compliance checks.

LAYOUT BEFORE QUANTITY

The best price per bay can still produce the wrong warehouse.

The number of bays should come out of the layout, not the other way round.

A basic layout needs to account for columns, walls, doors, dock areas, pedestrian routes, fire exits, services, charging points and operational zones. It also needs sufficient aisle space for the chosen handling equipment and pallet. The most space-efficient arrangement is not always the most productive one if it creates difficult turns, cross-traffic or poor access to fast-moving stock.

WHAT TO SEND FOR A QUOTE

A useful enquiry can be prepared in ten minutes.

Clear information reduces back-and-forth and helps Rackway match stock to the job.

For a new standalone run, send the warehouse postcode, approximate layout dimensions, pallet size and weight, required pallet positions, frame height target, beam level requirements and forklift information. For an extension, add close photographs of the existing racking and any labels so the system can be identified.

COLLECTION AND DELIVERY

Confirm the logistics at the same time as the stock.

For larger orders, unloading arrangements should be discussed before the vehicle is dispatched. State whether a forklift is available, whether the site has restricted vehicle access and whether there are booking-in procedures or fixed delivery windows. If frames are assembled, dimensions may affect transport and unloading; if they are dismantled, additional site assembly will be required.
